NAVA KERALA MISSION

HARITHA KERALAM – Cultivating an unpolluted environment with clean air, water and food for a sustainable life

Haritha Keralam is one of the four missions under Nava Kerala Mission, the flagship project of the Kerala government led by Pinarayi Vijayan. Hairtha Kerala comprises different components including waste management, organic farming and water resources management.

The mission envisages:

* Pollution-free water sources
* Revival of water sources
* Water conservation with the help of people
* Eco-friendly and sustainable waste management
* Enhancing organic farming

Although Kerala has been bestowed with heavy monsoon and a lot of water resources, many parts of the state succumbed to drought in the summer. It happens mainly due to the lack of proper conservation of water resources. So Haritha Keralam takes up the rejuvenation and conservation of water resources of all kinds to overcome this challenge. Efforts are made to conserve and protect 44 rivers, 50,000 ponds and 60,000 wells, lakes and streams. Waste management is another grave issue faced by the state especially in urban areas. Haritha Keralam promotes household level segregation and disposal of the waste scientifically through methods like composting, bio gas production, etc. It also implements solutions for the disposal, reuse and recycling of institutional wastes. The mission also envisions self sufficiency in producing vegetables, fruits and paddy by promoting the methods of organic farming. As a part of the programme organic farming will be extended even to small lands attached to households and a new culture of agriculture will be inculcated among the people of the state.
