One more project, considered impossible, gets actualized in the state. It is the Edamon- Kochi transmission line project which got completed. The completion of this project is also the historical moment which makes way for big leaps in the domains of power transmission supply and agriculture of the state. Owing to the staunch protests from landowners, Power grid Corporation had even decided at one point to leave the project, which had been delayed for long. Government brought the Edamon- Kochi 400 KV transmission line project to success through its constant intervention in the project activities and allowance of an attractive compensation package.
Supervisions and evaluation meetings conducted under the leadership of the Chief Minister and issues were resolved by including elected representatives. The land price for deciding the compensation was settled as five times the fair value. Compensation was given for the trees and crops that had to be cut down at 46 m wide area and also for the 16m wide line corridor. The compensation was given without taking up the land, thereby sustaining the landowners’ ownership rights. With the completion of Edamon- Kochi 400 KV line (148.3 km), Tirunelveli- Kochi-Thrissur- Udumalpettu 400 KV power highway (437 km) has become materialized.
Another milestone in this regard is the Kochi-Mangaluru GAIL pipeline project. The project was also marred with delays during the initial phases. Problems in obtaining the right of way over land led to the cancellation of all contracts in 2014. The stalled project was again resuscitated in 2016 under the new Government. Till May 2016, the right of way was secured only for 80 km long part of the total 410 km long stretch between Kochi and Mangalore. However, the government became successful in removing all obstacles and the project has almost reached completion. This project will help the easy distribution of natural gas. As the LNG terminal also gets realized, low cost and less-polluted fuel will be available in plenty across the state.
